For most kids, kindergarten school is the first time they truly spend time with someone other than parents and teachers. For us though, it was the last time. It was also the first time we realized that we had no clue what our kids were going to do with themselves, let alone how they would be different from each other. The experience changed our perception on what a school was and how it could be.
We had a few of these kids in our first year, and even though they had a good start, they still had a long way to go. Like most of the other kids, their teachers were only really good at one thing: making sure they didn’t get in trouble. We made some changes in our approach because we were still working on it, and the kids made more progress.
Our first year, the kids had a lot of fun, but they were really working on listening. We knew the kids didn’t get along with each other, but we could see how they were trying to make friends. We still have a few of those kids today who are still close friends and we are still working on how to make the transition smoother.

The transition to school is probably the biggest issue for a lot of kindergarten students. Because children are often confused about what they want to be when they grow up, it’s hard to get them to focus on their social development. Also, most schools have a lot of rules about kids using the bathroom, so it’s important to keep those rules in place. If you’re concerned about your child’s bathroom use, call your school and have them follow up with you.
The best thing you can do is take action. For example, if your kindergarten student is using the bathroom in your childs room, tell your school that they must move their child in the restroom because they are not allowed to be in the bathroom. Then let them know you will be monitoring their bathroom use. Make sure you remind your child they have to use the restroom correctly so they are good to go for the day.
And to remind yourself of something. While preschoolers are very focused on their own education and are taught a lot of things at a very young age, they only really understand a fraction of what is going on around them. If you let them know your childs room is not a place for them to be, they will not only be focused on their own schooling, but they will be focused on what other kids are doing in the room.
In kindergarten your child will have a very clear idea of what other kids are doing in the room, but they will not have a clear idea of what they are doing. The way I see kindergarten is you let your child be their own teacher. You let them decide what they need to do in their own room. You let them decide what they want to do in their own room. You let them decide what is important to them in the room.
